Pictures from the valley
Katherine's birth upstaged the visit from Amy et alia, so I am throwing in a few more pictures from their visit. We were in the Methow Valley for 5 days, and enjoyed lots of wonderful music, great food, farmer's market, tubing down the river, horseback riding (Dorothea), Rachel's birthday, general merrirment, and a heaping spoonful of bickering just to keep us on our toes. I am so happy that Boris and his boys are in our lives, and hope that they feel welcomed and loved.

Family
Our friend, Lucia Mumm, happened to be passing through Seattle three days after Katherine was born. In return for staying at our house for a night, she provided for us some beautiful family photos.

Katherine Leah Krentz!
Katherine Leah Krentz was born August 10, 2012! I was leaking amniotic fluid the week before, so my midwife decided it was best to induce me gently to see if we could get this baby out a couple weeks early. Kevin and I spent the afternoon at the hospital watching the Olympics (ribbon dancing is a sport???) and taking walks around Capitol Hill while I eased into early labor. At around 5 pm on Friday, Sally broke my waters and things started in earnest. I decided on a natural childbirth, so things got pretty painful and scary and I was not exactly at my best, but Kevin was by my side the whole time and I felt well taken care of by the unobstrusive staff at Group Health and my incredibly experienced midwife. During transition, Kevin came up with the idea to distract me by asking me trivia about our honeymoon during contractions, and if I managed to shout out the answer during the peak of the pain, I earned "points." I think I got 1.5 right out of about 10, but it did seem to help keep things light. Then things got really heavy and hard and before I knew it, I was pushing that baby out. I had never had an "urge" to push with Jesse, so although it did not feel good, I let my body do its primal thing, and the midwives let me take my time, and Katherine was born in no time. She was a healthy 8 lbs 2 oz, and has all her fingers and toes. Surprisingly, she is blond! and otherwise, looks almost exactly like her big sister did. More updates soon-- so far, we are all feeling great and doing well.

Baby Shower!
Since my mom, sisters, and neices were all miraculously in town at the same time, I thought it would be a good opportunity to have a baby shower! My family made me wonderful goodies and drinks, and I had a few friends come over to celebrate. It was lovely and fun and I couldn't have felt more showered with love, gifts, and blessings.

Camp Casey
Amy, Boris, Mom, Rachel, and all the kids (Dorothea, Aaron, Josephine, Moritz, and Bennett) all came to visit us this last week. We had an epic vacation, starting out on the cold and rainy Whidbey Island and ending in the hot and dry Methow Valley, all brought to you by the amazing state of Washington. Here are pictures from our first couple of days at Camp Casey, an old WWI army base that is owned by my school and offered to faculty for weekends throughout the year. We stayed in a huge Victorian-style officers' quarters house right on the base with plenty of room for everyone. The big adventure was digging for clams and mussels at Penn Cove, and then eating them all for dinner that night. The next day included a walk inspecting the old bunkers and cannons (never used, by the way), then taking the long route home through Anacortes, fish and chips, and a stop at a historical airplane museum.
